Storm forward Eli Katoa undergoes emergency surgery after seizures following head knocks in Pacific Cup clash

Melbourne Storm forward Eli Katoa has undergone emergency surgery overnight after suffering “seizure activity” following three head knocks in Tonga’s Pacific Cup match against New Zealand on Sunday.
Katoa first collided with teammate Lehi Hopoate during the pre-game warm-up but was cleared to play without a concussion test.
He sustained a second blow to the head early in the match and briefly left the field for a Head Injury Assessment (HIA), which he passed before returning to play.

The Storm said on Monday Katoa was in a stable condition.
“Melbourne Storm forward Eli Katoa was taken to hospital after suffering seizure activity on the bench during the second half of yesterday’s Pacific Championships match between Tonga and New Zealand,” the statement read.
“Eli underwent surgery overnight and is in a stable condition being supported by his partner and mother. Storm medical staff remain in close contact with the hospital and Tonga’s team Chief Medical Officer.
“The Club will provide a further update as additional information becomes available.”
Katoa later posted online that he appreciated “all the love” and messages he had received.

New Zealand won the match 40-14 at Eden Park, securing a place in the Pacific Cup final against Samoa.
Katoa played in the Storm’s grand final losing 2025 and 2024 teams and has played for Tonga in six Tests.
