News website Europe 1 also reported that the person allegedly selling the drugs was carrying 75 ecstasy tablets as well as seven vials of cocaine.

Craig, 28, is a veteran member of the Kookaburras team.

Police confirmed they witnessed him allegedly buying the drugs in the 9th district of Paris.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has also confirmed Craig was in custody.

The Hockeyroos and Kookaburras were both eliminated at the quarter-final stage this week.

Australian players are thought to have attended a team function on Tuesday before some of them ventured out to the Paris nightlife.

One gram of cocaine for personal use is illegal in France.

The Paris Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that police officers who witnessed the alleged cocaine transaction at the foot of a building in the 9th arrondissement, on the night of August 6 to 7, also arrested the alleged seller.

The office said the alleged seller was born in 2006, and the alleged buyer was born in 1995.

It said given the quantities of narcotics seized from the seller, the investigation had been entrusted to the Narcotics Squad.

Later, Craig apologised for his actions.

He received a warning, no charges, and no conviction.

Australian Chef de Mission Anna Meares said: “I cannot condone what Tom has done. He is a good person who made a bad decision.”
