Australian chef de mission Anna Meares has confirmed that Michael Palfrey will continue to be part of the Dolphins coaching team following a recommendation by head coach Rohan Taylor.

Palfrey was in disgrace after he told Korean media in Paris that he “really” hoped world champion Kim Woo-min would win the gold medal in the 400m freestyle event.

“He can win, but ultimately, I really hope he swims well,” Palfrey said before ending his interview with “Go Korea”.

Palfrey was facing the sack from the Australian team but there has been a change of heart.

“I support Rohan Taylor and his team and the decision they have taken in the interests of the swimming team,” Meares said.

“It is a decision based on high-performance and wellbeing.”

The Dolphins senior management team spoke with athletes, including those coached by Palfrey, the athlete leadership group and coaches in response to Palfrey’s recent comments regarding Korean athlete Kim Woo-min.

Also part of the conversation were Dolphins Sam Short and Elijah Winnington, whom Woo-min competes against.

Taylor said athlete welfare across the entire 41-member pool team was at the forefront of the decision for Palfrey to stay on in Paris.

“We took the time to consider the two options – for Mick Palfrey to stay … and for Michael Palfrey to be sent home,” Taylor said.

“After extended conversations, with athletes, the athlete leadership group, and coaching staff we have made the decision for Michael to stay. It is not one we have taken lightly and I stress this is an ongoing discussion for when we return home.’

Previously Taylor described Palfrey’s comments as “un-Australian”.

“I am extremely disappointed,” he said on Thursday.

“For a coach on our team to promote another athlete ahead of our athletes is not acceptable.”

Palfrey has told Australian officials he’s “very sorry” for the comments.
