Ivy Lam health update issued after jockey suffered serious head injuries in scary fall at Gawler

The 20-year-old was airlifted to hospital with a head injury.

Young jockey Ivy Lam has been upgraded to a stable condition after being critically injured falling from her horse during a race at Gawler on Monday.

Lam, an apprentice jockey from Hong Kong, was riding Jacob’s Gate in Race 7 when the horse suffered a medical episode and collapsed at the 700m mark, according to Racing South Australia.

Lam suffered serious head injuries in the fall and was immediately treated by on-course paramedics.

She was then airlifted to Royal Adelaide Hospital.

“Racing SA Stewards and First Care Medical were immediately on the scene and worked to stabilise her condition prior to the arrival of SA Ambulance paramedics,” Racing SA said in a late-night update on Monday.

“We’re advised Ivy regained consciousness prior to being airlifted to the RAH where she is currently undergoing scans.

“We are enormously grateful to all those involved in Ivy’s care.

“Racing SA is in close contact with Ivy’s family and we will provide further updates when possible.”

The final race of the meeting was abandoned following the incident.

Lam has ridden 16 winners from 139 rides since beginning her career in January.
