These golf fans had more faith in Rory McIlroy than the North Irishmen had in himself during the first round of the US Open.

The fans packed in as McIlroy hit a shot directly over them, but luckily he did not shank the shot into the crowd.

His bid for a fifth major title got off to a rocky start at Oakmont Country Club, coming off his epic Masters win in April, as he stumbled to a 4-over-par 74.

McIlroy began strongly with birdies on the 11th and 12th holes.

But his round collapsed as he attacked the first none holes, dropping six shots over his final eight holes, including a double bogey on the par-three 8th.

He missed the green and then had a frustrating time getting out of the rough, hitting the ball a metre with is next shot. He slammed his club into the ground in anger.

“I just didn’t execute the way I needed to coming in,” McIlroy said.

“It’s a tough course, and it punished every mistake.”

The 35-year-old now faces an uphill battle to make the cut, sitting eight shots behind overnight leader JJ Spaun.
