Steve Smith’s amazing summer has somehow got even better, with Australia’s star batter praised for his quick thinking to save a fan from injury at the Australian Open.
Attending the semifinal between Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner on Friday night alongside wife Dani Willis and some friends, Smith sprung into action when a fellow attendee got up from their seat and slipped.
“Sitting behind Steve Smith at the Alcaraz v Zverev semi-final last night. During a break at switch of ends a lady is departing the aisle in front of Steve and she starts to fall,” one fan who got in contact with News Corp about the incident said.

Smith sits only one catch behind England’s Joe Root for the most in Test history and was in rare form in the field over the summer, with the pick of his 14 snares a one-handed blinder off the bowling of Michael Neser to dismiss Will Jacks and break some dogged England resistance.
The legendary batter is a huge tennis fan and took to his Instagram story to laud Djokovic, who topped two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner in a five-set epic to set up a blockbuster final with world No.1 Carlos Alcaraz.
Despite his blazing form at the end of the Big Bash League season, Smith is not in Australia’s Twenty20 squad for the upcoming World Cup, which will be played across Sri Lanka and India and begins on February 7.
