An Australian Open match was delayed for several minutes after a ball kid collapsed in a scary incident.

The girl was wobbly on her feet and fell on her back before quickly standing up again. She then appeared to tell the chair umpire something as Sonmez stopped quickly and rushed over to help.

Sonmez helped the girl to the side of the court when the youngster appeared to go limp in her arms.

The chair umpire and Alexandrova also rushed in to help.

The match was temporarily delayed while the ball kid received the care required.

After receiving treatment, she was able to regain composure and stood on her feet as she was helped off the court.

“Ball kid is up on their feet and they’re being helped off court. They’re in safe hands,” the commentator said.

She was given a standing ovation as she left the court.

It wasn’t the hottest day in Melbourne with the mercury nudging the high 20s, but the incident highlights the potential issues the heat can cause at the Australian Open.

After the delay, Alexandrova was able to hold serve and send the match into a decider.

But the rising Turkish star won the decider to secure the biggest win of her career in a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 result.

Elsewhere, Jasmine Paolini plans on enjoying the Melbourne sunshine after wasting no time in becoming the first women’s big gun through to the second round.

The seventh-seeded Italian needed just 69 minutes to see off Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-1 6-2 in the opening match of the tournament on Rod Laver Arena.

A two-time grand slam finalist in 2024, Paolini won all eight of her service games and broke her Belarusian opponent four times.

Elina Svitolina is enjoying more than her Sunday, the 12th seed continuing her joyous summer with a 6-4 6-1 rout of Spaniard Cristina Bucsa.

The Ukrainian 12th seed is riding a six-match winning streak to start the year after reigning last week at the ASB Classic in Auckland.

Svitolina is loving life on tour more than ever, travelling with her retiring husband Gael Monfils and three-year-old daughter Skai.
