Once the woman signalled to another diver that she was OK she began her dive before rising to the surface eight minutes later.
After being helped back onto the boat she became short of breath, and after climbing some stairs on the vessel she became unconscious.
CPR was performed on the woman before she was rushed to a local hospital where she died.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told 7NEWS.com.au it was providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Bali.
“We send our deepest condolences to their family and friends at this difficult time,” it said.

The woman is the second Australia to die in Indonesia in the past week, after 30-year-old Thomas James Cossins was killed in a motorbike crash.
Cossins, 30, was riding the sports bike when he lost control going downhill and around a curve in Buleleng, Bali on Friday local media reported.
He was travelling with his fiancé at the time.
