Australian man prevented from leaving Singapore over alleged theft from multiple shops at Changi Airport

An Australian man has been arrested in Singapore after allegedly stealing from eight shops at the airport during transit.
The 45-year-old was arrested on September 2 after a pair of sunglasses was reported missing from a shop in the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 2, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said in a statement on Thursday.
Police launched an investigation about 7.40pm on the day of the alleged theft, and identified the suspect after reviewing CCTV footage.

Police further allege the man had entered eight different shops and stolen various items without making payment.
The items included sunglasses, bags, a water bottle, luggage, a passport case, keychains and accessories, with a total value exceeding S$2600 (A$3059).

Authorities have since recovered all the items.
“The police take a serious view of shop theft cases and will deal firmly with offenders in accordance with the law,” the SPF said.
“Offenders should not assume that they can evade detection by attempting to leave the country quickly after committing such crimes.”
The man was prevented from leaving Singapore and is set to appear in court on Friday.
If convicted, he could face up to seven years in jail, a fine, or both.
