China executes 11 members of notorious Myanmar Ming family known as ‘scam mafia’

China has executed nearly a dozen members of a notorious scam “mafia” family from Myanmar.
Eleven members of Ming family, known for running scam centres according to local media, were handed to Chinese authorities after their empire was toppled in 2023.
The family were brought before a court in the Zhejiang province in September where they were sentenced for a slew of crimes including homicide, illegal detention, fraud and operating gambling dens.

Further, the family’s crimes caused the deaths of 14 Chinese citizens, and injured many more.
Myanmar authorities originally arrested the family, who ran Laukkaing, a town near the border, alongside several other clans.
Before they were stopped, the family had overhauled the region, establishing a host of casinos and red-light districts.
Local authorities were prompted to intervene by Beijing, who provide extensive military aid to the country.
Scammers in the region have entrapped thousands of Chinese workers, according to the BBC. This is just a small portion of the hundreds of thousands of people trafficked in scamming compounds.

It is unclear if the family caused the deaths of any non-Chinese citizens, as this does not appear to have been considered by the Zhejiang province court.
