A Tennessee death row inmate, Christa Pike, survived a failed execution after two rounds of lethal injection drugs did not work as intended.

US President Donald Trump has expressed his astonishment at Tennessee’s failure to execute convicted killer Christa Gail Pike.

Pike survived two doses of the barbiturate pentobarbital on Wednesday, supposed to have been administered as a lethal injection to execute her for a homicide she committed against a classmate 31 years ago, at age 18.

In the wake of the botched execution, Mr Trump was asked whether changes to capital punishment should be made whilst he was visiting Texas on Thursday.

“Well, that was an interesting situation, but you’re going to have to speak to Tennessee about it, whether or not they’re going to go forward,” Mr Trump responded.

Turning to Republican Representative for Texas’s 13th congressional district Ronny Jackson, Mr Trump told reporters his counterpart would be more familiar with the question given his background as a doctor.

“You know what that was about? An execution where the medication didn’t exactly work,” Mr Trump said to Mr Jackson.

“He would answer it better than anybody. How does that happen? He’s a great doctor,” Mr Trump announced to the crowd.

“I don’t know how that happens. It should be easy to do,” Mr Jackson responded.

Mr Trump then agreed with Mr Jackson, stating “it shouldn’t be very difficult.”

Reporters and witnesses to Pike’s execution recount her complaining about a burning sensation in her arm before falling asleep and snoring loudly.

The distressing scene caused her legal team to file an emergency motion to halt the execution before any further harm came to Pike, saying “Ms Pike has lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat and is audibly snoring.”

Pike’s attorneys have confirmed she is alive but in a critical condition in hospital following the doses of state-administered pentobarbital failing to end the 50-year-old’s life.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has called the failed execution “a tragedy” and committed to pausing state executions for the remainder of 2026.
