Elvin Abrea: Young jockey trampled to death following horror mid-race fall

The racing community has been sent into shock following the death of a young jockey who was trampled to death mid-race in a freak accident.
Elvin Abrea, 32, passed away on January 17 in horrific circumstances during a race at the Hapi Jockey Club in Padre Garcia — the Philippines’ only horse racing track.
Taking the reins of Fly With The Wind, the young hoop attempted to steer his mount through the field of seven runners before tragedy struck.

Before anyone had time to react, a horse charging from behind trampled over the top of the dismounted jockey and continued on — leaving Abrea in tatters.
Following the freak accident, local stewards confirmed the incident in their report.
“Approaching the 1000 meter mark. EA Abrea (Fly With The Wind) was unseated,” the report stated according to The U.S. Sun.
“Stewards observed that Fly With The Wind clipped the heels of the horse (Magnolia Ariana) in front of him.
“JL Paano when asked explained that he did not feel anything and his mount was running a straight path.”
Heartbreaking news that the 32-year-old had not survived the incident was later announced by the Phillipine Jockey Club.
The track, where Abrea had lodged one win, is mourning the riders death.

“The Phillipine Jockey Club mourns the passing of jockey Abrea, who sadly passed away following a riding incident,” the club said in a statement.
“We extend our deepest and sincerest condolences to his family, loved ones, fellow jockeys, trainers and the entire racing community.
“Jockey Abrea’s dedication, bravery, and passion for horse racing will be remembered with respect and gratitude.
“During this time of profound loss, the Phillipine Jockey Club stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and the racing community as we honour his life and service to the sport.”
