Italian jet fighters have scrambled and shadowed an American Airlines passenger plane after a reported bomb threat aboard the flight from New York to Delhi in India.

The flight which departed JFK airport at lunchtime on Sunday was diverted to Rome after the security scare was reported on board with the plane making an abrupt turn and dive towards the nearest available safe haven.

American Airlines Flight 292 was tracked over Turkmenistan when it changed course due to the “possible security issue” a statement from American Airlines said.

“Safety and security are our top priorities and we thank our customers for their understanding,” the statement added.

“We are working closely with local authorities and will provide updates as the situation develops.”

Airline tracking site Flight Radar 24 said the plane had been diverted due to a bomb threat and posts via X show the Boeing Dreamliner accompanied by the two Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon warplanes.

The plane touched down in Rome and was greeted by emergency services in a full-scale security incident alert scenario.
