The car used is being treated as high risk as it may have been wired with explosives, reports from local media have confirmed.

President of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff, said police had arrested a doctor from Saudi Arabia.

“This is a terrible event, particularly now in the days before Christmas,” Mr Haseloff said.

“We will do all in our power to take care of those injured and their families who are in shock.

German police said they are investigating the incident as terrorist attack.

Horrific images are emerging of the car ploughing through the packed Christmas market in Germany with at least one person dead and over 60 seriously injured.

The eastern German town of Magdeburg was holding it’s annual Christmas market when a car sped into the crowd and mowed down bystanders for almost 100m in a tightly packed thoroughfare.

“We estimate there are at least 20 ambulances here, a lot of firefighters, and I can see the police helicopter circling in the sky,” local media reported.

Eyewitnesses said the car drove straight into the crowd, in the direction of the town hall.

Eight years ago, a truck driven by Anis Amri, a failed Tunisian asylum seeker with Islamist links, crashed into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people and injuring dozens of others.
