Féile O’Sullivan: 13-year-old girl loses both legs in ‘serious’ farm accident

Just days before Féile O’Sullivan was meant to celebrate her 13th birthday, her life changed in “ways no child should ever have to face”.
The young girl was seriously injured in a horrific farm accident in the Beara region of West Cork in Ireland over a month ago, resulting in severe lower abdomen injuries and a double leg amputation.
She was initially airlifted to Cork University Hospital for urgent treatment but it was decided it would be best for her to go to Dublin for further specialist care.

A fundraiser has since been launched after “her world was turned upside down” to go towards Féile’s medical treatment, specialist equipment and home adaptations.
At the time of reporting, €156,417 ($AUD280,000) has been raised from nearly 2000 donations, reaching closer to the €250,000 target.

“Anyone lucky enough to know Féile will tell you how full of life, energy, fun, kindness and what a pure messer she is. She adores dogs and horses,” a message from Féile’s family on GoFundMe reads.
“Farming is in her blood, and she loves everything about nature, outdoors, staying active - She’s also a true sports star — whether football, soccer, gymnastics, or anything involving movement and fun, Féile is always giving it her all, with a smile and a sparkle in her eyes.
“This accident hasn’t changed who she is, but has just changed what she now needs.”

Féile has had 15 surgeries and faces many more to help her recovery.
Local Councillor Finbarr Harrington, who has been rallying the community to donate towards the young girl’s recovery, said it was Féile’s strength that has kept her alive.
“Féile is an incredibly strong girl, in every way. She might not have made it without that strength, and she has faced everything and is still fighting, she is just incredible,” he told local news network, CorkBeo.
“It’s incredibly difficult for Féile and for her mother Maureen and everybody in the community here wants to support them and let them know they will be there for them now and in the years to come.”
