The sightseeing flight was to celebrate the birthday of Russell Harris, 46, who was with his partner Keylla, and their friend, Chris Marrott-Castellat, 45, who is visiting from Perth.

Harris sustained a lower back injury and was checked for a suspected broken leg, which he has been cleared of.

His partner is believed to have a neck fracture, while Marrott-Castellat escaped with severe bruising.

Both men are from Perth although Harris now lives on the holiday island.

The three were taken to a hospital for further treatment and remained there on Friday night.

With the Australian pair was a pilot, who avoided life-threatening injuries, and a crew member, who is reportedly okay.

The crash unfolded minutes after takeoff from a helipad at Garuda Wisnu Kencana.

The helicopter crashed between limestone cliffs and the aircraft itself was severely damaged.

Locals and rescue crews rushed to the scene, with footage showing the careful process to stretcher Harris out of the area.

His partner was able to walk out, as could Marrott-Castellat.

Everyone aboard the chopper was “evacuated safely”, Indonesia’s search and rescue agency BASARNAS said earlier.

Indonesian authorities say a team is being sent to the crash site for further investigation.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told 7NEWS.com.au in a statement it “is providing consular assistance to two Australians in Bali”.

Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago nation of about 270 million people, has been plagued by transportation accidents in recent years, including plane crashes and ferry sinkings.
