A tourist has been found dead and covered in wounds inside a water tank at a Bali lodging house.

The unidentified man was found by the owner of the property about 2.30pm on March 4 when he went to inspect why water was not flowing from the taps.

According to local media, the naked body was initially mistaken for a mannequin before the owner realised it was a human.

Local police have launched a major investigation into the death, with Bali Search and Rescue team coordinator Bayu Arya Wiraga saying it was believed that the man was a foreigner.

“It is estimated that the body belongs to a foreign national,” Mr Wiraga said.

“The body was found unclothed and the water tank was completely dry.

“The cause of death is still under investigation. The body has been transferred to Professor Ngoerah Hospital for further handling.”

Electrocution is being investigated as a cause of death, with Mr Wiraga stating that loose electrical cables were found dangling inside the tank.

However, the circumstances surrounding the death and why the man entered the water tank are not known.
