Long Island fires: New York state of emergency declared as brush fires erupt in Suffolk County

Three major brush fires have erupted on New York’s Long Island, with authorities racing to bring blazes under control.
“Suffolk County FRES’s is coordinating the response to three major brush fires on the East End, Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine wrote in a public service announcement.
“We are working with the town of Southampton closely and multiple police agencies.

The fires erupted on Saturday local time, with smoke seen billowing into the sky.
“I am issuing a State of Emergency as Suffolk County fights brush fires in the Pine Barrens,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul wrote on X.
“I have spoken to Suffolk County Executive Edward Romaine and offered any necessary State resources.
“We have the NY National Guard helicopters providing air support, and multiple state agencies are on the ground.”
