Passengers and staff at Amsterdam Airport witnessed one of the most horrific scenes imaginable as a person was killed after entering a running aircraft engine.

“An employee from the aircraft in question reported that someone had jumped into the engine while the crew had just completed the safety instructions,” De Telegraaf reported.

“There was ‘a hellish noise’ after which smoke could be seen for a moment. Passengers and employees saw the incident happen before their eyes.”

Emergency services rushed to the airport just before 3pm on Wednesday, after the alarm was raised about the incident involving a KLM aircraft.

A statement from Schipol Airport officials read: “Today there was a horrible incident where a person ended up in an airplane engine.’’

“Our thoughts go out to the relatives and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this.

“The royal military police [the Marechaussee] are currently conducting an investigation.”

The Dutch military police, Marechaussee, said it was running the investigation in the Netherlands capital and the investigation has not yet identified who the person was.

The spokesperson added that it was too early to say whether this was an “incident”, or a form of suicide. He added that all passengers and crew, who will be important witnesses to the investigation, had safely left the plane.

A police spokesperson said: “An incident occurred this afternoon on the Schiphol platform where a person fell into a running aircraft engine and died. The Marechaussee has started an investigation.”

It added that all passengers and employees of the flight in question, KL1341, had disembarked and were being taken care of.

Lifeline: 13 11 14.
