Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has been hospitalised for the third time this year, Amalienborg Palace issuing a statement on Sunday confirming her admission to Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen.

The palace cited a blood clot and dehydration as the reasons for the hospitalisation after Queen Margrethe indicated she felt unwell on Sunday evening.

The hospitalisation comes after two major health incidents earlier this year for the royal.

In May, Queen Margrethe suffered a heart attack and underwent surgery for a balloon angioplasty before being readmitted two weeks later with a large blood clot in her hip caused by a fall she suffered in 2025.

The blood clot located in this admission has been referred to as “new.”

“Queen Margrethe is in good spirits &, given the circumstances, is doing well,” the Palace said.

The Queen will be kept in hospital for treatment and observation this week, resulting in her missing her cousin King Harald of Norway’s funeral on Wednesday.

Queen Margrethe’s son and Danish monarch King Frederik shared his condolences with King Harald’s family, acknowledging the strong ties between their monarchies.

“Your father meant a great deal to my mother and both of us,” King Frederik wrote to King Harald’s son and heir.

Queen Margrethe abdicated the throne in 2024 due to her declining health but kept her title of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe in line with Danish royal traditions of honouring former reigning monarchs.

The current Danish sovereigns, King Frederik, and his wife, Australian born Queen Mary, will be in attendance at King Harald’s state funeral in Norway on Wednesday.
