The Israeli military says it has attacked a Houthi militia target in Sana’a days after launching fatal strikes on the Yemeni capital.

The Israeli military wrote on X: “STRUCK: A Houthi terrorist regime military target in Sanaa, Yemen.”

Loud explosions were reportedly heard in the area around the capital.

“It’s like an earthquake,” said Hussein Salem, a Sana’a resident.

He saw plumes of smoke over his neighbourhood in the western side of the capital.

The strikes occurred as the Houthi satellite news channel was broadcasting a pre-recorded speech for the rebels’ top leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi.

Defence Minister Israel Katz published a picture on X showing him sat alongside Chief of General Staff Eyal Zamir and other military officials at the military headquarters.

“Whoever raises a hand against Israel - his hand will be cut off,” Mr Katz wrote.

Israel carried out attacks in Sana’a on Sunday, killing at least 10 people.

“Since the beginning of the war, the Houthi terrorist organisation has been operating under Iranian leadership and funding to harm the state and its allies, undermine regional stability and disrupt global freedom of navigation,” the military said.

Since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, the Iranian-aligned Houthi rebels have regularly attacked Israel with rockets and drones in support of the Hamas movement.

Israel has repeatedly targeted sites in Yemen in response.

Earlier on Thursday, the Israeli military said it had intercepted two drones fired from Yemen.

Air-raid sirens initially sounded in Israeli towns along the border with the Gaza Strip, it said in a press release.

More than an hour later, a second drone attack was reported.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.
