Both paramedics and bystanders have rushed to free survivors from the burning wreckage of a passenger plane which crashed on a US highway.

Footage showed people running towards the plane as flames burst from it on the Texas highway.

In the video, aired by NBC, two people were even spotted smashing the glass of the cockpit with sledgehammers and crowbars in a bid to pry it open amid the black smoke.

Survivors can be seen emerging through the door while another video shared by police shows firefighters attempting to extinguish the flames coming from the aircraft, which was almost sheared in half.

The bystander who shot the footage and supplied it to the US network, Zayra Garza, gave a harrowing account of the scene at Laredo.

“It looked like part of a movie. I was in shock,” she told the Associated Press.

“What was worrying me was the fire. I was concerned that it could have just exploded at any time.”

One of the six people on board the plane was later confirmed dead by the Laredo Police Department.

Police also confirmed that the aircraft collided with a vehicle as it hit the Loop 20 highway. Five first responders were treated for smoke inhalation.

While it’s still unclear what caused the plane to crash the Federal Bureau of Investigation is already on the site.

The tragedy marks the third significant air crash in the US in as many days. It comes just a day after eight people were killed when a B-52 crashed during a test flight at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

Twelve people were also killed on Sunday when a plane on a skydiving outing crashed in Missouri.
