One witness said the victim’s hand was cut “clean off” when he rushed into the pub which was about to close, ECHO reported.
Another witness said the 18-year-old had “part of his arm hacked off” when he entered the pub.
The victim was taken to hospital and is now in a serious but stable condition.
Dried blood stained the pub door frame as well as the door step of the house on Colin Close.
Graeme Osborne, a detective inspector, said the victim’s injury is serious.
“This was an assault with a bladed weapon, which has left the victim in hospital for treatment of a serious and potentially life-changing injury,” he said.
Mr Osborne also confirmed that a 17-year-old girl suffered a minor hand injury during the incident.
Another 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, and wounding with intent. He remains in police custody.
Meyerside Police are appealing for information to assist in their investigation of the serious assault.
“Some of those people present may have seen or heard what happened, and indeed know who was involved,” Mr Osborne said.
“To have seen this assault will undoubtedly have been upsetting, but we need to gather all information possible, which includes witness accounts, CCTV, or any other footage or images from those present, living or passing nearby.
“It is vital that people come forward as a matter of urgency, and we are determined to find those responsible. Knife crime can have fatal consequences and devastates families and communities.”
