A man who spent more than two months in a medically induced coma after an alleged hit and run has defied all odds and woken up.

Haidar Alfadawi suffered serious harm, including a traumatic brain injury after his car was struck by another car in Dearborn, Michigan in August.

Emergency services found Mr Alfadawi unresponsive on a nearby path and he was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

He was placed in a medically induced coma, and in late October, his prognosis was still poor according to his family’s lawyer Amir Makled.

But now, Mr Makled has shared photos of Mr Alfadawi, who has woken up.

“It certainly is a miracle. For the longest, we thought that he’d never wake up,” Mr Makled said.

“There’s glimmers of a smile from him from time to time. And so that gives the family a lot of hope.”

Mr Makled said his client is suffering from both memory loss and a limited communication ability.

His family remains hopeful that he will make a full recovery.

“His family’s in good spirits. They’re happy to see that their son, their brother. Their father is, you know, in a position where they can at least see him and talk to him and communicate with them,” he said.

Shocking footage shows the moment Mr Alfadawi’s car was struck at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Howe Street.

Murtadha Alizairij, the driver of the other vehicle, is now facing several criminal charges including assault with intent to murder.

Police allege Mr Alizairji left the scene immediately after the incident. He was later arrested.

According to CBS News he is expected to appear before court in a pretrial hearing next month.
