Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance has had a mid-air scare after his plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

The pilot turned back to Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport after he advised there was a malfunction with the door seal.

Senator Vance’s campaign spokesperson Taylor Van Kirk said the pilot declared an emergency shortly after the plane left the airport in Milwaukee and returned for repairs.

After the issue was resolved, the plane, known as ‘Trump Force Two’ continued to Cincinnati, where Vance lives.

The chartered Boeing 737 returned to the airport around 1.30 pm local time and was cleared to take off again about 2.15pm.

Travelling with the Ohio Senator and vice presidential hopeful was his wife Usha, their dog Atlas and staffers.

Senator Vance was in the swing state of Wisconsin for a campaign event with the Milwaukee Police Association, which has endorsed the Trump campaign.

Senator Vance was last month named Donald Trump’s running mate for November’s election.

The incident is another high-profile blow for struggling plane manufacturer Boeing which has been plagued with problems and accusations of manufacturing shortcuts in recent years.

The company agreed to plead guilty to fraud in connection with the Max, two of which crashed, killing 346 people.

The Federal Aviation Administration has also increased its oversight of the company following mistakes including the blowout of a panel on an Alaska Airlines jet.
