A mother has been charged with neglect after her two-year-old son allegedly took a gun from her purse and shot himself while his sister watched.

Keiara Bickett, 28, was charged with felony neglect of a dependent resulting in death and has since lost custody of her nine-year-old daughter.

Indianapolis police responded to a call from Ms Bickett on June 19. She told them that her son Javarius had shot himself in the head.

The horrifying incident unfolded at a CVS car park in the 2300 block of East 46th Street just before 3pm that afternoon.

Court documents reveal that Ms Bickett told police that she had planned on going through the drive through to collect a prescription, but it had been closed.

She told police she was going to go inside instead, and stopped to text a friend before she did while the car was still running.

According to her, this is when she noticed her son was not in his car seat in the back, and had moved to the front seat where his sister was.

Ms Bickett said as she was parking, she was still looking at her phone and heard the gunshot.

Court documents say she told police that she ducked when she heard the noise, and then saw her son falling from the car seat to the car floor. She allegedly stopped the car, went around to the passanger door, picked Javarius up and called emergency services.

The two-year-old was rushed to Riley Hospital, but tragically died from his injuries, WTHR reported.

Devastatingly, the boy’s older sister watched the whole ordeal unfold, as she was still in the front seat of the car when the gun went off.

Ms Bickett appeared in court last Friday and was handed a no-contact order, meaning she cannot communicate with her nine-year-old daughter.

Instead, her grandmother will be her carer, at least until Ms Bickett’s next court hearing on September 22 when the no-contact decision will be reviewed with advice from the Indiana Department of Child Services.

Court documents reveal that Ms Bickett told police she owns a 9mm Glock Model 26 Gen 5 handgun which she carries in her handbag, and moves to a box inside her wardrobe when she is at home.

She said she usually keeps her bag zipped up, but she thinks it was not zipped up on the day her son died.

Investigations are ongoing and no information about pleas has been made available.
