A crime scene has been declared after the mother of a high-profile TV host was reported missing, as police suspect she was “taken against her will”.

Nancy Guthrie, whose daughter Savannah Guthrie is the co-host of the NBC morning news program, Today, was last seen at her home in Catalina Foothills, north of Tucson in Arizona, around 9.30pm (local time) on Saturday, January 31.

The 84-year-old was reported missing on Sunday when a friend noticed she did not attend a church service and called one of her adult children.

After searching Ms Guthrie’s home on Monday, police confirmed that the property is being investigated as a “crime scene” rather than a “search mission”.

“At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will, possibly in the middle of the night. Taken against her will includes possible kidnapping or abduction,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told People.

“We have an 84-year-old woman who went to bed Saturday night and come Sunday morning, she’s gone,” he said.

“We know, at least we believe, and I believe we know, she did not walk out of that home on her own.”

According to police, it is highly unlikely that Ms Guthrie would wander off because her physical mobility was “quite limited” and she requires daily medication for some health issues that could be fatal if not taken within 24 hours.

Despite those mobility issues, Mr Nanos said Ms Guthrie was “as sharp as a tack”.

“And that too is concerning that here you have this lady who’s got all her wits about her, she knows what’s going on. So yeah, somebody came into that home, and I believe took her out there without her permission. It was against her will.”

Police have sent out drones and search dogs to look for the missing grandmother; however, to no success.

Ms Guthrie’s daughter, Savannah, has not appeared on the Today show since the her mother’s mysterious vanishing.

On a statement shared with the program, the television personality said, “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.”
