A US politician hoping to become the Democratic mayoral candidate for New York City has been arrested by federal agents.

Brad Lander, who is also the city’s financial officer, was taken into custody while escorting a defendant outside a federal immigration court.

A video shared by Mr Lander’s wife on his X account reveals the dramatic moment the mayor hopeful demanded to see a judicial warrant for a man being taken away by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

As multiple officers grabbed Mr Lander, he was heard repeatedly asking, “Do you have a judicial warrant?”

After Mr Lander refused to let go of the detainee, a voice could be heard saying, “Take him in,” prompting agents to handcuff him.

Mr Lander was heard saying, “You don’t have the authority to arrest US citizens,” as he was being escorted from the building.

It has been reported that Mr Lander was arrested for assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer, according to NBC.

Mr Lander’s wife shared an update on X shortly after posting the shocking video, revealing that her husband was still in ICE custody.

Mr Lander is currently running in the Democratic Party primary for mayor.

The election is set for November 4.
