At about 2.30pm, she was attacked by a “pack of dogs” that local police say were “roaming the area”.

A person known to Ms Jones heard her screaming for help and quickly called emergency services.

When the East Knox Fire Department arrived they found Ms Jones with life threatening injuries that were so significant she was unable to communicate.

Paramedics rushed her to Barbourville ARH Hospital, but tragically her injuries were too severe and she could not be saved.

In a press release, Knox County Sheriff’s Department said a “death investigation” into the incident remains ongoing.

Mike Smith, a Knox County sheriff told Fox 56 News that the dog’s owner could face charges.

“In Kentucky you do have an obligation to control and confine your animals so we’re looking at all aspects of this situation and will determine that as the investigation continues,” he said.

Ms Jones’ sister, Peggy Jones, said that the 44-year-old would be remembered as a “one of a kind” woman with a “heart of gold”.

Peggy said her sister would do “anything in the world to help anybody if she could”.

Tributes for Ms Jones are flowing on social media, with some users calling for local “leash laws”.

“This so so sad. Prayers for her family. If there were stricter animal laws things like this may be prevented! I can’t imagine how scary this was for her,” one Facebook user wrote.

“I hope as a community we pitch in and help this family with the financial burden of funeral expenses,” another commented.

“This is why there should be a leash law implemented!! I’ve also almost lost my kid when he was very young by a dog and we had an aggressive dog across from us not long ago and only thing the animal control would tells you there nothing you can do by law unless it shows aggression at that moment before you can defend yourself! I would definitely get on board on signing a petition for a leash law,” another wrote.
