Three people are critically injured after a helicopter crashed on a freeway in northern California..

The helicopter went down on Monday night on the eastbound lanes of Highway 50 in Sacramento, CBS News reported, adding it was a helicopter that provided air medical services.

The Sacramento Fire Department and Federal Aviation Administration did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

It was not yet clear if the helicopter was travelling to or from an area hospital, the report said.

The cause of the crash was being investigated, CBS said.
