Two girls have died after they attempted a viral “subway surfing” challenge on a New York City train line.

Police responded to an emergency call on Saturday just after 3am local time and made a devastating discovery at the Marcy Avenue stop in Brooklyn.

Two unidentified girls were found unresponsive and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Demetrius Crichlow, NYC’s transit president said the girls had participated in a high risk challenge.

“It’s heartbreaking that two young girls are gone because they somehow thought riding outside a subway train was an acceptable game,” he said.

“Parents, teachers and friends need to be clear with loved ones: getting on top of a subway car isn’t ‘surfing’—it’s suicide.”

Mr Crichlow said the girls’ families and the workers who found their bodies are “horribly shaken”.

Police have launched an investigation into their deaths, and are yet to reveal how old the girls were, Daily Express reported.

At least six people died trying to do the same challenge in New York City last year. In 2023, five people died.

New York City Police said last year they arrested 229 people in relation to subway surfing, which nearly doubled 2023’s arrest number of 135, AP reported.

They said majority of subway surfers are boys and the average age is 14, with the youngest being just nine-years-old.
