Laura Clery: US comedian reveals ‘terrifying’ accident after being pinned under 270kg fridge
‘I could feel it getting harder to inhale, like my body was deciding to shut down.’
US comedian and social media star Laura Clery has revealed she nearly died after her 270kg fridge fell on her while she was at home with her two young children.
Clery took to Instagram on Friday to share details of what she described as the most “terrifying night of my life as a single mum” after being pinned under the massive kitchen appliance.
In a post shared on Patreon, Clery explained her large French door fridge, which weighs between 500 and 600 pounds (roughly 220-270kg), is supposed to be mounted to the wall.

“Two nights ago, my son, being exactly who he is, decided to climb it. I saw it shift slightly, just enough to make my stomach drop.
“So I ran over to push it back into place. I thought I’d just nudge it in and move on with my day like a woman who has control over her life.
“The second I pushed it, it came down on me.”

Clery, who has three million Instagram followers, said the fridge crashed down so quickly she had no time to get out of the way, with the full weight pinning her lower back and hips against the kitchen island.
“I couldn’t move. I tried to push it off and it didn’t even slightly budge. It felt like pushing against a building,” Clery said.
“My breathing started to go.
“I could feel it getting harder to inhale, like my body was just slowly deciding to shut down.
“The pain was so intense it almost didn’t feel real.”

She said her daughter Poppy’s crying snapped her back to reality, while her son Alfie ran outside of the house.
“And I’m just there, pinned under a fridge, thinking this is the dumbest way anyone has ever died,” Clery said.
In the first Instagram video shared on Friday, Clery is being wheeled out of her house on a stretcher.
Clery, who is also a New York Times best-selling author, explained she thankfully had her phone in her pocket and was able to call emergency services for help.
She said it took three firefighters to lift the fridge off her.
In the second video, Clery can be seen inside the ambulance after being given pain relief medication.

She thanked the firefighters who saved her life and got her safely to the hospital’s trauma unit.
Clery said doctors were “shocked” to discover she had not sustained any broken bones from the freak accident.
Some followers questioned the incident, asking if the accident was actually one of Clery’s comedy skits.
Most fans, however, were relieved to hear she had not sustained serious injuries.
“I’m home now. I’m bruised, I’m sore, it hurts to walk and I feel like I got hit by a truck that also lives in my kitchen,” Clery wrote.
“But I’m okay. My kids are okay. And I cannot stop thinking about how differently this could have gone.
“If my phone hadn’t been in my pocket, I don’t know what would have happened.”
