A young Aussie has died in a horrible drowning tragedy while holidaying in Thailand.

The 22-year-old Melbourne man was reportedly on a tour boat with six other foreigners exploring the coast of Ko Racha Yai when he dived into the water while intoxicated, news.com.au reported.

The strong currents pulled him under the surface and he was unable to swim back up.

It’s understood a call was made to emergency services and when medics arrived on the boat, the tourist was unresponsive on the deck.

Medics immediately started performing CPR and were able to find a pulse.

He was rushed to Phuket’s Chalong Hospital, which could have taken around an hour and 15 minutes to reach from the island, but he was sadly pronounced dead on arrival.

Local police said the man had entered the sea multiple times before the tragedy.

“The victim had consumed a large amount of alcohol before entering the water. He was reportedly intoxicated and repeatedly jumped in and out of the sea before eventually drowning,” Police lieutenant colonel Kanen Somrak said.

“No illegal substances were found at the scene. Only empty alcohol beverage bottles were discovered.”
