The products have been available for sale in Queensland stores and in northern NSW at stores in Tweed Heads South, Ballina, Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Lismore, Casino, Toormina, Armidale, Byron Bay, Goonellabah, Tweed Mall and Moonee Beach.

The recall is due to shiga toxigenic escherichia coli (STEC) contamination, Food Standards Australia New Zealand said.

STEC is an infection stemming from the bacteria E. coli and can cause diarrhoea that may have blood in it, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting and a mild fever.

Symptoms can be severe in children, older people and those with reduced immunity.

Children younger than five may develop haemolytic uraemic syndrome, a rare condition that can cause long-term effects on kidney function.

“Consumers should not eat these products,” FSANZ said.

“Consumers should return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund. Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.”
