Man allegedly threatens beachgoers with samurai sword
A man has been charged after allegedly threatening people at a Sydney beach with a samurai sword.
NSW Police said they were contacted around 2.25pm on Sunday with reports of a man acting suspicious in the area.
When they arrived at Bilga Crescent, Malabar, officers were told that a man had allegedly threatened a group of people at Little Bay Beach, armed with a samurai sword.
No one was injured during the incident.
After a search of the area, police arrested a 37-year-old man on Mayo Street, Little Bay.
Police located a number of edged weapons in the man’s possession and a samurai sword was found hidden in a nearby bush.
The 37-year-old was charged with three counts of having custody of an offensive implement in a public place and one count of being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.
He was refused bail and is expected to appear in court on Monday.
Alleged Nazi salute amid fierce protest clash
Melbourne’s CBD turned tense on Sunday as an anti-immigration rally drew hundreds into the city, with police stepping in after a confrontation at a major central intersection.
The March for Australia event was part of a broader wave of anti-immigration demonstrations staged across several Australian capitals, with organisers and supporters calling for net overseas migration to be cut.
In Melbourne, many in the crowd blamed post-pandemic migration levels for worsening housing shortages and pushing up living costs.
Counter-protesters also gathered in force, including members of Unite Against Racism Victoria, Unionists for Refugees and the Refugee Action Collective, as rival groups converged in the CBD.

Police allege a man had earlier performed a Nazi salute before another protester reached out and flicked a One Nation hat from his head.
The man then allegedly tried to punch the other protester in the face before officers moved in, wrestling him to the ground as more police rushed to the area.
Victoria Police confirmed a 64-year-old Wantirna man was arrested and later released pending summons.
Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
