Rain is set to drench all Australian capitals, bar Darwin, in what is expected to be a wet week ahead.

A belt of winter cold fronts is expected to sweep across the nation, bringing with it rain for much of the south and continuing into parts of the northern states.

“The start of winter has seen welcome rain over southern states, but dry conditions over the northern half of the nation,” 7NEWS Meteorologist and Weather Presenter Tony Auden said.

“That pattern is set to change a bit over the next few days, with rainfall also forecast into parts of central and northern Queensland.”

Auden said a pattern of “blocking” high pressure systems, which push rain-bearing cold fronts away to the south, has broken down, leaving the door wide open for the entrance of winter cold fronts.

“This is allowing a conveyor belt of active winter cold fronts to sweep across the nation, not only bringing rain to southern states, but also linking up with some tropical moisture to bring rain a bit further north,” he said.

“For the most part, we’re not expecting anything too nasty this week, just a good soaking for much of the nation.”

Brisbane is in for a wet week, with rain expected on Thursday, before a brief reprieve on Friday, and continuing on Saturday throughout the week.

Wet weather is expected to start again on Sunday in Sydney, with a 90 per cent chance of rain, continuing into Monday and Tuesday.

Melbourne is also in for a wet week, with rain setting in on Thursday and continuing through to Tuesday.

Perth is expected to get the largest downpour, with a high chance of rain from Wednesday and up to 20mm of rain on Thursday.

The downpour over the WA capital is expected to continue through to Friday, with a break over the weekend before starting up again on Tuesday.

Adelaide joins the list, with a high chance of showers drenching the city from Wednesday through to Monday.

Hobart is in for a long wet week, with rain — along with chilly temperatures — expected from Friday until next Tuesday.
