Police are investigating after a driver died in a crash in Avenel, Victoria.

A passer-by called emergency services to Avenel-Nagambie Road, after noticing a crashed vehicle, just before 10am on Sunday.

Victoria Police said it appears the driver of a ute lost control and crashed into a tree before the vehicle came to rest on its roof.

The driver, who is believed to have been the only person in the car, died at the scene.

The small historic town is about 129km north of Melbourne, known for its connection to Ned Kelly.
