The former police officer has pleaded not guilty and is arguing self-defence before a jury trial in the NSW Supreme Court.

Mr Lamarre-Condon has stepped into the witness box to give evidence after prosecutors closed their case earlier on Thursday.

He appeared calm for much of the short block of evidence before the lunch break, at one stage being asked by his barrister John Stratton SC to “slow down”.

He did choke up at one stage within the first 10 minutes of his evidence while speaking about a former colleague of his who took his own life.

Mr Lamarre-Condon was also asked about “confronting” situations he was tasked with during his time as a police officer, including having to deal with multiple dead bodies.

He also told the jury about a complaint he made against a fellow police officer in 2018 about alleged homophobic remarks .

Just before the lunch adjournment, he told the jury he met Mr Baird at the Universal nightclub in Sydney in October 2022.

Their relationship began as sexual but Mr Lamarre-Condon told the jury by December 2022 they were going on “romantic” dates like seeing movies and going to dinner.

“Jesse was very much like me,” Mr Lamarre-Condon said.

“He was willing to give anything a crack...we did a lot of sporting activities...he also has his scuba license like me.”

Mr Lamarre-Condon will continue giving evidence when court resumes at 2pm.

The key allegations

Mr Lamarre-Condon allegedly shot Mr Baird with his police pistol twice in his kitchen, with the second shot described as “execution” style”, before shooting Mr Davies through the TV presenter’s bedroom door as he tried to call triple-0.

The former police officer in turn claims his gun went off twice during a struggle and fatally wounded Mr Baird.

The gun was flung into another room, and Mr Davies emerged with the gun shortly after and accidentally shot himself during a second struggle, Mr Lamarre-Condon claims.

His actions afterwards were described by prosecutors as “calculated” to “cover up his involvement” in the couple’s alleged murders, but Mr Lamarre-Condon’s barrister John Stratton SC argued they were the actions of a man who “panicked considerably”.
