A court has heard how a now-former police officer questioned a colleague about infamous murder cases before allegedly murdering his ex-partner and his new boyfriend.

Beau Lamarre-Condon appeared before the Supreme Court in Sydney on Friday during the second week of his trial accused of murdering Jesse Baird, 26, and Luke Davies, 29, at a home in Paddington on February 19, 2024.

Ben Higginson, a former police officer, told the court Lamarre-Condon quizzed him about two high-profile murder cases while they worked together the night before Lamarre-Condon allegedly killed the couple.

Higginson said Lamarre-Condon asked what cases he had been doing, to which he responded he had been working on the murder of 21-year-old Lilie James.

James was bludgeoned to death by her ex-boyfriend Paul Thijssen at St Andrew’s Cathedral School in Sydney’s CBD in October 2023.

Higginson said Lamarre-Condon believed Thijssen was “stupid for doing it on CCTV”, adding he appeared “‘pretty blase”.

“He asked if Thijssen hadn’t murdered Lilie and then been seen on CCTV, would he have gotten away with it,” Higginson said.

He said police use myriad ways to track down potential suspects in murder cases, including mobile phone data and bank activity.

Higginson recalled telling Lamarre-Condon police believed “Thijssen used Lilie’s phone to text her father to come to the school after he killed her”.

Higginson also told the court Lamarre-Condon had also raised the murder of Matthew Leveson and the subsequent discovery of his body in the Royal National Park years later.

He said Lamarre-Condon asked about whether cash was harder to track.

“If you’re gonna commit a crime or murder or whatever if you get cash it can stagnate the investigation,” Higginson recalled telling Lamarre-Condon.

The day after the discussion with Higginson, Lamarre-Condon disguised himself as an UberEats driver and entered his ex’s house.

Both Baird and Davies were fatally wounded when three shots were fired within a minute.

Lamarre-Condon later dumped their bodies south of Sydney and Baird’s belongings in a skip bin in Cronulla.

But he argues both men were killed in self-defence in two separate violent struggles and his actions to clean the scene and dispose of the bodies showed his panic.

Jurors on Thursday heard from Alexandra Scobie about Lamarre-Condon’s alleged questioning about whether records from a phone could still be obtained if the device was switched off.

In the late January 2024 conversation, he also asked her if hire cars could be tracked, she testified.

Scobie said she received a rushed phone call from her friend later that night when he tried to reassure her about his questions.

“I’m not gonna do anything illegal,” Lamarre-Condon allegedly told her.

The trial continues.
