Pope denounces ‘anti-Semitic violence’ of Sydney attack

Pope Leo XIV has denounced the “anti-Semitic violence” behind the Bondi Beach massacre as he prayed for the victims and the “gift of peace and fraternity” this holiday season.

“We pray for those who suffer from war and violence, in particular today I want to entrust to the Lord the victims of the terrorist attack in Sydney against the Jewish community.”

“Enough of these forms of anti-Semitic violence!” he said.

“We must eliminate hatred from our hearts.”

‘Symbol of resilience’: Sydney Opera House lights up

The sails of the Sydney Opera House lit up on Monday night with a projection of the menorah, marking the second day of Chanukah.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said in a statement that it was more important than ever that the Jewish community knows they do not stand alone.

“We cannot, and will not allow Jewish Australians to feel they must hide their faith, their traditions, their religious celebrations or their identity,” he said.

“Lighting the Sydney Opera House is a simple but powerful gesture: a message to the world that we cherish our Jewish community, that we honour their courage, and that we stand with them in solidarity and love.”

Mr Minns added that the candles projected are a “symbol of resilience and a reminder that even in darkness, we choose to stand with one another.”
