A mother and two young children are fighting for life in hospital after a ‘suspicious’ house fire in Melbourne.

The fire, which occurred in the south east suburb of Chadstone, ripped through a home on Terrigal Street on Thursday night.

Emergency services were called to the property around 9.40pm, finding a woman and two primary school aged children in the home.

Crews successfully evacuated all three from the home, before transporting them to hospital in a life-threatening condition.

“At this stage, the fire is being treated as suspicious,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

“A crime scene has been established, and an arson chemist will attend the scene later today (Thursday).”

A total of 30 firefighters and 11 trucks were called in the battle the enormous blaze, with speciality equipment used to complete the rescue.

“FRV firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, forced entry into the smoke-filled home, locating and rescuing two children and one adult, from the first floor of the property,” a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said.

“All were in a serious condition.

“The fire involved the upper floor bedrooms and en suite, with fire penetrating the roof, causing partial structural collapse.”

The fire has left the property with a gaping hole in the roof.

Police are urging anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
