Christmas Day weather reveals a scorcher, and possible thunderstorms

The Bureau of Meteorology has released the most highly anticipated weather forecast of the year, revealing which cities will get that beautiful Aussie sun this Christmas Day, and which cities are expected to have a wet one.

Relatively warm temperatures are expected across the country, with the mercury hitting close to 40C in the nation’s west.

Other cities will be less lucky, with possible showers and thunderstorms stretching from Darwin to Sydney.

Here’s what to expect on the big day.

Perth

If you’re in Perth, make sure you’ve got the air-con cranking because it’s gearing to be another scorcher with mostly sunny conditions and a top of 39C.

If the forecast is correct, it will be the hottest Christmas Day Perth has seen since 2021.

East to northeasterly winds 15 to 25 km/h are expected to shift westerly 15 to 20 km/h throughout the day.

Sunrise is expected at around 5:09am which will be perfect for those early risers on Christmas morning.

A minimum of 25C is expected.

Melbourne

Across the other side of the country, Melbourne is expected to have a mild Christmas Day with a top of only 19C.

Prepare for cloudy skies and a slight chance of a shower.

West to southwesterly winds 15 to 20 km/h are expected to turn southerly 15 to 25 km/h during the day.

A low of just 13C is expected.

Sydney

If you’re in Sydney, prepare for a shower or two on Christmas morning, with the rest of the day expected to be partly cloudy.

28C is expected as the top, which will be lovely temp for all the Christmas Day beach-goers.

The low is expected around 19C.

Expect light southeasterly winds 20 to 30 km/h in the morning.

Brisbane

Prepare for a thunderstorm in Brisbane, with a top of 32C and a low of 23C.

There will be a chance of showers, but the majority of the day will be partly cloudy.

Light easterly 15 to 20 km/h winds are expected during the day.

Adelaide

Much like Melbourne, it looks like Adelaide also has a mild Christmas Day expected, with a low of 13C and a top of 26C.

Thankfully there is no chance of rain, and cloud cover will be clearing up throughout the day.

Light southeasterly 15 to 20 km/h winds expected during the day.

Hobart

If you’re in Hobart, Christmas might be a bit chilly this year.

It will get up to 17C with a slight chance of a shower and westerly winds 25 to 35 km/h.

The low is expected to be just 9C, so keep those Christmas sweaters handy.

Canberra

Canberra will be mostly sunny on Christmas, hitting a top of 28C.

It will get down to a low of 10C.

Winds are expected east to northeasterly 15 to 20 km/h, moving north to northeasterly 15 to 25 km/h throughout the day.

Darwin

Up in the top end, Darwin’s got a possible storm brewing with a high chance of showers.

The day is expected to be cloudy and warm, with a low of 25C and a high of 32C.

Northwesterly 15 to 25 km/h winds are expected during the day.
