A man in his 70s has died after being hit by a vehicle on a quiet, suburban street south of Sydney.

Emergency services were called to Lakelands Drive in Dapto shortly after 10.30am on Monday following reports that a pedestrian had been hit by a car.

Bystanders commenced CPR shortly after the incident and were soon assisted by NSW Police who continued efforts to revive the man.

Despite their desperate attempts, the man in his 70s could not be revived by the time NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

The man in his 70s is yet to be formally identified.

The driver of the vehicle, a 43-year-old woman, was treated for shock by paramedics and subsequently taken to Wollongong Hospital for mandatory testing.

Lake Illawarra Police District officers have established a crime scene and the crash investigation unit has launched an investigation into the incident.

Authorities are urging anyone with dashcam footage or information related to the crash to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
