A range of milk has been urgently recalled from shelves across South Australia after it was found to have been contaminated by E. coli bacteria.

A batch of Tweedvale Dairies reduced fat milk, which is stocked at independent retailers across South Australia including at IGA stores, has been flagged with a microbial contamination of E. coli.

Both the 1L and 2L milk bottles with the best before date of 21/10/2026 have been recalled.

Food Standards Australia has warned customers to not consume the milk from the batches, and to request refunds of the product from place of purchase.

“Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice,” a Food Standards Australia statement said.

If consumed, E. coli can cause severe infections in the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts, as well as in the bloodstream, prostate, and gallbladder.

E. coli can also cause pelvic inflammatory disease, as well as wound infections, and in rare cases can lead to pneumonia and meningitis.

Common E. coli infection symptoms include watery or bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, or feeling tired or unwell, according to Health Direct.

“These symptoms usually start 1 to 10 days after exposure to the bacteria,” a Health Direct statement said.

“Most people will recover within a week.”

If E. coli infects the urinary tract or kidney, symptoms can include a burning sensation during urination, an urgency to urinate, blood in urine, fever, and abdominal or back pain.

Consumers are encouraged to seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
