Two people have been killed following a multi-car smash on the Harbour bridge.

Chilling CCTV footage has revealed the final moments leading up to a deadly crash on the Sydney Harbour Bridge that killed two men, injured a pregnant woman and resulted in traffic gridlock across the city.

The crash on a critical arm of Sydney’s motorway network involving four cars and a bus occurred about 1.40pm on Thursday, triggering a major emergency response and leading to bumper-to-bumper traffic snaking up to 12km from the scene.

A car travelling northbound veered for “some unknown reason”, police believe, into oncoming traffic heading southbound, causing a cascade of collisions.

The man in the northbound car and a male driver of another car died at the scene.

Dashcam footage obtained by 7NEWS shows a blue hatchback driving northbound along the bridge in the moments leading up to the deadly smash.

The car is seen driving erratically before it veers into a southbound lane and into oncoming traffic.

This crash is believed to have then caused a domino effect, with four cars and a bus all colliding.

Both of the deceased men are yet to be formally identified.

Paramedics also assessed a pregnant woman and a man at the crash site.

The pair had suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance in a stable condition to Royal North Shore Hospital.

The bus driver was uninjured and no passengers were on board at the time.

Acting Superintendent Clayton McDonald said it was not clear why the northbound driver veered into oncoming traffic, however, it’s understood a medical episode is among several lines of inquiry being investigated.

Motorcyclist charged

No arrests have been made over the crash, although a motorbike rider was arrested after allegedly riding through the scene and into the cordoned-off crash scene while emergency services were treating the injured.

He was stopped by an officer and taken into custody.

“That gentleman drove towards police who stood in front of him and were able to stop that gentleman,” McDonald said, adding one officer suffered grazes during the arrest.

He is expected to be charged with serious traffic offences, and it is alleged the bike was unregistered and his licence was suspended.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
