Staff and patrons at a hotel have been terrorised by masked gunmen during a robbery in Sydney’s southwest.

At about 1.45am on Friday, officers from Bankstown police area command responded to reports of an armed robbery at a hotel on the corner of Anderson Avenue and Braesmere Road at Panania.

Police were informed that two men wearing dark clothing, face coverings and gloves – one armed with a shotgun and the other with a pistol - entered the hotel and threatened staff and patrons.

An amount of cash was stolen from the premises before the men fled the scene in a black 4WD and a black Holden Commodore sedan.

A security guard was punched in the face during the robbery.

There were no other reports of injuries to staff or patrons of the hotel during the incident.

Officers established a crime scene that will be examined by specialist police.

As investigations continue, detectives are urging anyone who may have information about the matter – or were in the area at the time with any available dashcam/mobile phone footage – to contact Bankstown Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
