However, a keen buyer snapped it up after the first open house inspection for $4.55 million.
The sale was $2.95 million above the $1.6 million the couple paid for the 969 square metre property in 2002 when the original three-bedroom, one-bathroom weatherboard home was described as a “blank canvas” that offered “huge potential”.
Drawing inspiration from Mediterranean and modern farmhouse styles, the luxury home was designed by Rogue Architects.
The house spans 409 square metres of floorspace.
Inside features high ceilings, arched windows, ducted air conditioning, European oak herringbone floors and natural marble stone throughout the home.
Three of the five bedrooms have ensuites, including the palatial master suite with Corchia marble benchtops on the vanity, a fluted freestanding bathtub, a dual shower and his and hers walk-in robes.
A guest bedroom has an ensuite, walk-in robe and direct access to the terrace.
The open-plan living area on the ground floor features a Monet marble fireplace and connects to the luxury kitchen fitted with Corchia marble on the benchtops and splashback.
The kitchen has a large butler’s pantry, Miele appliances, a 108-bottle wine cellar and a separate bar.
Other spaces include a media room, a home office, a gym and a mud room.
There are two alfresco entertaining areas, one with an in-built barbecue and drinks fridge, and an in-ground pool.
The Boyds are no strangers to buying and selling houses.
Mala is the third home the couple has built since Boyd retired from the NRL in 2020 after a 15-year career that included stints with St. George Illawarra Dragons and the Newcastle Knights.
In 2022, the couple sold another project in the inner-city Brisbane suburb of Paddington for $4.2 million after purchasing the property for $1.205 million.
The couple, who have three daughters, are expecting a baby boy due in August.
