Glen Alpine, NSW: Man fatally shot during home invasion in Sydney’s south-west as alleged offenders flee

Police believe a home invasion overnight which left a man dead was a “targeted attack” which is being investigated as a case of mistaken identity.

Emergency services received a call about a home invasion in Sydney’s south-west around 3.40am on Tuesday.

When they arrived at the property on Mount Sugarloaf Drive, Glen Alpine, officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was treated for a gun shout wound and injuries to his arm and neck but died at the scene.

Believed to be in his 20s, the man is yet to be identified by police.

Acting Superintendent Gretchin Atkins told reporters on Tuesday morning the incident was “just tragic”.

“A young man has lost his life today, and that’s obviously just tragic,” she said.

“We believe it is a targeted attack at this point in time and it is subject to investigation,” she said.

Ms Atkins said police were aware of social media posts online suggesting the shooting was a case of mistaken identity.

She said it was “much too early” to reveal if that was the case.

“Look, we’re aware of those online social media posts,” she said.

“And everything is under consideration.

“So we are... We don’t have any actual... We don’t know, we don’t know a lot at the moment. But everything is being considered.”

Police officers were told that unknown offenders fled the scene prior to their arrival.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation is underway with help from the homicide squad to determine what happened.

Ms Atkins said the victim was not known to police and had only a traffic offence against his name.

She added that his family, who were home at the time of the attack, were assisting with police inquiries.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
