The Melbourne Cup Carnival has been officially launched at Flemington Racecourse, with the racing festival beginning this weekend with Derby Day.

A major Australian music festival has been cancelled just weeks before thousands of fans were expected to attend, with organisers blaming scheduling issues for the last-minute decision.

Electronic dance music festival Hypersonic was set to return to Melbourne and Sydney in November following its debut in 2025.

However, organisers confirmed on Wednesday that both events had been scrapped, leaving ticket holders facing disappointment.

The festival was scheduled to take place at Melbourne Showgrounds on Friday, November 20, before heading to Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday, November 21.

In a statement published on the festival’s website, organisers said they were devastated to cancel the highly anticipated events.

“We are devastated to confirm that hypersonic Sydney and Melbourne will not be going ahead in 2026,” the statement read.

Organisers explained that changes to the Melbourne event’s schedule had created complications that ultimately affected both festivals.

“Due to scheduling conflicts, Melbourne was moved to a Friday this year. Unfortunately, this change hasn’t worked out as hoped for an all-day festival,” they said.

“The flow-on impact has meant we can no longer deliver the festivals to the standard our artists and audience deserve.

“We are gutted. We sincerely apologise for the disappointment and thank everyone who has supported hypersonic.”

The cancellation comes less than a month before the festival was due to kick off, with a star-studded line-up of international and Australian performers already announced.

World-renowned DJ Armin van Buuren was set to headline the event for the second consecutive year.

Organisers have outlined several options for disappointed festival goers, including a full refund to be processed within 21 days.

“Thank you for your understanding and continued support,” organisers said.

Further information about refunds and ticket transfers is available on the official Hypersonic website.
