Flight crew raced to stop the woman from opening the door, managing to stop her before the door was fully opened.
Reality TV star Brooke Jowett, known for her appearance on Survivor Australia, was on board the flight with her partner and young child when the terrifying incident broke out.
“She decided to try to open the doors, which apparently triggered something to do with the emergency slide and yeah, it was a big bloody big panic, it was very, very scary, but we’re fine,” Jowett said on Instagram.
The Melbourne-based mum claimed the woman was upset with her seat and wanted to move. However, after allegedly not being given a new seat, she decided she wanted to get off the aircraft while it was 33,000ft above the sea.
“She was very unhappy and decided she wanted to get off, but we were more than an hour into the flight over the ocean and, yeah, we all got told to put our seat belts immediately.
“Very freaky,”
Jowett said a hero off-duty police officer helped the crew stop the woman from fully opening the door.
The flight was carrying around 260 passengers, all of whom had an unexpected extra night’s stay in Bali.
“We had an aircraft return to Denpasar last night after a disruptive passenger attempted to open one of the aircraft doors and was abusive to our crew,” a Jetstar spokesperson told The Nightly.
“The safety and welfare of our customers and crew is our top priority and we thank them for the way they responded to the situation.
“This sort of unacceptable behaviour will never be tolerated on our flights.”
Flight Radar 24 data shows the plane turned around over the Indian Ocean, with the terrifying ordeal happening over open waters.
